Writing Tip: More on Describing an Object

As previously mentioned, when getting rid of writer's block, one of the many things you can do is to describe an object. And here's the good thing about it: you don't even have to have "the block" to do it. You can use it to spark your imagination or add flavor to your story!

Objects have stories attached to them. While others may find no value to a small toy on your desk, it obviously gives you something, otherwise, why keep it there? Chances are, every object you keep have a certain story to tell. Whether it reminds you of an event or a person, you can use that object to provide a starting point to your story.

Do you keep a candy wrapper in your wallet? Why? What's the story behind it? What makes it different from other candy wrappers? Because it was given by a special someone? Or maybe it has a printing mistake on it?

I remember when I was in high school, and during the last day of class before my friends and I eventually went our separate ways, I pulled a blade of grass and put it in my wallet. Now, more than a decade later, something as worthless as a dried up grass serves as a reminder of that innocent time, when all that mattered was enough money to buy soda and a piece of bread.

What about you? What are the stories behind your special objects?
