How to Find a Setting: Recall a Place

After work, try this little experiment. You can do this in your living room or kitchen on your leisure time, when you are most relaxed.

Recall a place from your past: a former house, your grandma's house, your local beach. Anything.

In almost all cases when doing this exercise, the usual results are places that are from our childhood, or a place that reminds you of a time when you were most happy. Either way, recalling a place is a good way to get you started writing.

How?

Recall a place, say, your grandma's house. The one you visited every Sunday when you were little. Describe the excitement/resentment when you find out you're going there. Describe the scent, the scenery, the house itself. Where did grandma used to sit? What did she usually do first thing when she sees you?

From there, the ideas should flow freely. You'll begin to write things as you wanted them to be.

Good luck!
