A story, no matter how bizarre, has a chance of being read and accepted by certain demographics. Remember this, the readers you want to read your story might not like it, but surely, there are people who will appreciate it, even if you don't know it.
However, to be read by many people (not just a certain demographic), you have to look at what is being widely read and not and write a story based on them. Stories such as:
1. Inspirational Stories
Stories that capture a person's day-to-day problems and somehow finds a silver lining are popular stories that never get old. Think about it: people don't have to save the world everyday, nor do they have anything extraordinary happen to them. But they have to work everyday, they lack money, they take care of their children. If you can find a good thing among the sea of problems that face them everyday, you'll have a good story.
2. Love Stories
People can't get enough of love. Everybody experienced it at least once in their lives; they have fantasies of one day finding someone they can be happy with. Sure, love stories are a dime a dozen these days, but when you have a good one, a relatable one, it will be popular.
3. Fantasy Stories
After a hard day at work, wouldn't it be nice to escape a little while and fly to where your imagination used to dwell on a daily basis. This is the truth of life: while we are hardened by our experiences when we grow up, a small part of us remains a child: imaginative and hopeful. This is why fantasy stories are successful.
These three examples are some of the successful types of short stories throughout time. Write about these topics and you'll have a fairly good story in your hands.
