Let's Write a Short Story

Note: This will be a long term project for this blog. I'm going to attempt to write a short story and comment on it. Hopefully I can finish this, barring important projects or whatnot.

Start with an object. It doesn't have to be beautiful yet. Just start with something. Anything.

A man walks by the road, looking suspiciously left and right.

Don't worry about the grammar. Everybody makes mistakes sometimes. You can edit them out later. Just write the ideas and scenarios that come to your mind right now.

He stops walking when he gets to the train station, which is empty, because the next train will arrive won't arrive until the next day.

"Shit," the man said.

Having nowhere to go to, he finds a bench in a darkened corner and lies down. Clutching something inside his jacket, as if losing it would be equivalent to a swift death.

Don't worry about the details either. That "something" above? What is it? How important is it to the story, or the man in the story? I don't know. All I know is I want him to clutch something, to guard something.

Now where to go from here?

Sleep won't come easily tonight. Not after all that has happened. In 24 hours James' life had changed. He was an ordinary office worker yesterday when he woke up. Now he was a wanted man: by the police and the agents of a multi-million dollar corporation. Yesterday, he made plans to make up to his wife for his shortcomings as a husband. Now it'll have to wait. That is, if he sees her again.

James North is on the run.

That's it for now!
